My mom and I wearing each other’s makeup!

For today’s blog post, I am combining my two most-loved things — my family and makeup! My mom and I decided to put the cosmetics we have been using in two separate makeup bags and then switch products so that I use her makeup and she uses mine. If you want to see how it went, then please keep scrolling.

My Mom’s Makeup Bag

To begin my look, I used the original L’oreal True Match foundation for the first time in what seems like forever. This really does have so much coverage without ever looking cakey, so I understand why it is my mom’s holy grail. The Mac Studio Finish Concealer is the absolute best for covering up stubborn blemishes, but my mom actually uses this to concealer under her eyes; I stayed true to the challenge and also did this and although the coverage is really good, it definitely creased a lot more than I would have liked. Another unique part of my mom’s makeup routine is that she uses the Mac Bronzing Powder in ‘Golden’ all over her face like a powder because she says it creates a sun-kissed effect and pulls her whole look together. Although I definitely inherited my mom’s love for bronzer, honestly, the idea of using bronzer all over my face seemed a little frightening to me, so I just used this along my cheekbones and temples for a sheer wash of warmth. One thing we have in common is that we both love the shade ‘Blushbaby’ from Mac for blush because it is such a pretty mauve while still looking neutral. My mom knows I love highlighter, so she was nice enough to let my try her Benefit Hollywood Glo liquid (discontinued), which I used on the tops of my cheekbones for a shimmery rosy glow. To fill in my brows, I used the Mac ‘Charcoal Brown’ Eyeshadow, which I think is a great alternative to more expensive brow powders since it has just the right amount of pigmentation and is the ideal ashy brown shade. To replicate my mom’s everyday eye look, I used ‘Cashmere Bunny’ and ‘Risque’, two of the cool-tones browns from the Too Faced Natural Matte Eyeshadow Palette, in my crease and outer corner followed by the Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow in ‘Cinnamon Spice’ (discontinued), a shimmery bronze, all over my lid for a neutral and slightly smokey look. My mom, who taught me the q-tip trick, is honestly so good at creating a super thin and clean liner look, so I used her favorite Almay ‘Brown’ Liquid Eyeliner followed by the L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara. Finally, I used the Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in ‘Rose Velvet ‘, a deep rosy brown with a soft, creamy finish and the only product my mom will ever apply on her lip. Overall, I was surprised with how much I enjoyed using all of my mom’s signature products and how much I liked the completed look. It felt very Cindy Crawford with all of the 90’s inspired neutrals and the matte finish was a fresh change for the new year.

My Makeup Bag

Like always, my mom applied her foundation with her fingers and she loved the formula of my Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation, finding it to be very bendable and natural. She seemed a little hesitant about my Maybelline Fit Me Concealer, but she was surprised with how well it covered her dark circles and how moisturizing it felt. She dusted the Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent Powder over her t-zone, but thinks it might not work for deep skin tones because of its slight white cast. Much to her disappointment, my mom traded in her beloved bronzer for my BareMinerals Warmth All Over Face Color Bronzer, which she defiantly patted all over her entire face. I warned her not to because of its deep red undertones, but it ended up working for her, so that was good. She loved the dusty rose shade of my Tarte ‘Paaarty’ Amazonian Clay Blush and really liked how her eyebrows looked after using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo. With the collection of Mac eyeshadow singles currently in my makeup bag, my mom created an all matte look using ‘Soft Brown’, which she loved, and ‘Brown Script’, which she wasn’t impressed with due to its string red undertones. For mascara, she used my mini Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara — she was not a fan of the name — and for lips, she enjoyed using my favorite Wet n Wild ‘Bare It All’ Lipstick, and finally my Buxom Full-On Lip Polish in ‘Dolly’. Overall, she thought her finished look using some of my makeup products was very fresh and radiant, and liked all of the neutral shades.

Besides the obvious variation in skin tone (which explains why I look a little orange), the primary difference between my mom’s beauty routine and my own beauty routine is that my mom wears almost the exact same makeup look with the exact same products every day, while I am always creating different looks and changing the products I use. Doing this fun challenge with my mom has inspired me to also create my own signature makeup routine with my go-to products and to never be afraid to break the rules of beauty! Thanks to my for helping me with this post and for all of the makeup inspiration! What beauty lessons have you learned from your mom?

XOXO,
Makena
