Audrey Hepburn is one of my most favorite old Hollywood icons, not only because of her timeless beauty and effortlessly chic attitude, but also because of her selfless character. Audrey’s iconic makeup as Holly Golightly in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s was done by Wally Westmore and is absolute perfection. Today, I tried my very best to recreate her makeup look, so if you would like to learn how to do the same, then please keep reading!
~FACE~
Holly Golightly is a very whimsical character and her youthful skin reflects her personality. The Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation is the perfect product for achieving a flawlessly fresh base à la Audrey. It has light to medium coverage with a satin finish and looks very natural on the skin. For concealer, I used the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector* to eliminate any discoloration and make me look more awake. As with the rest of the cream products in this look, I used a damp BeautyBlender to apply both of these, pressing them into my skin with bouncing motions. I dusted a light layer of the BareMinerals Mineral Veil, a translucent loose powder, to set my makeup and mimic Audrey’s luminous, but not dewy, finish.
~CHEEKS~
Throughout the movie, Audrey always has noticeably rosy and flushed cheeks, so before I powdered my face, I dabbed the NYX Rouge Cream Blush in ‘Natural’, a light pink with neutral undertones, along the upper portion of my cheeks. To recreate Audrey’s beautiful facial structure, I am going to contour under my cheekbones, along my jaw line, and on my temples, but I am avoiding any warm-toned bronzers, since those were not incorporated into her look. I blended my Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer, which has neutral undertones, with my ‘Nudie’ eyeshadow, which has cool undertones, to carve out my features. To make my cheekbones look even more defined, I used additional translucent powder underneath my contour for more contrast. Audrey’s look was completely free of shimmer and I don’t think she wore any highlighter in the movie, but for a subtle sheen, I think the MAC Strobe Cream is a lovely option.
~EYES~
Audrey’s brows and lips evolved according to the decade, but one thing that always stayed the same was her signature eye look. She had naturally thick and structured brows, but compared to her earlier films, they were a lot less bold in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I filled in my eyebrows with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in ‘Soft Brown’, making sure to accentuate both the top and bottom portions and then combing them out with the spoolie to ensure that they do not look drawn on, especially near the front. All you need to achieve her hazy yet polished eyeshadow look, is a matte, cool-toned gray-brown; I used the shades ‘Nudie’, a light ashy beige, and ‘Cashmere Bunny’, a medium taupe, from my Too Faced Natural Eyes Eyeshadow Palette. Unlike myself, Audrey has deep set eyes with a large lid space and a very defined crease, so to replicate her features and create a shadow-like effect, I blended the two colors upwards and outwards through my crease and outer corner. As you can see in the photos above, Holly always wears thin winged eyeliner. Using the Maybelline Gel Eyeliner in ‘Blackest Black‘, create a thin line from the inner to outer corner extending to the tail of the brow in a small flick. While Audrey’s liner elongated her already round eyes, I want to enlarge my almond-shaped eyes, so to do this, I am going to make my line slightly thicker in the center. She had very long, separated lashes with more volume and drama on the outer corner, so I used the L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara, but feel free to use fake eyelashes for a more accurate representation. To complete Audrey’s signature doe-eyed look, I used the Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in ‘Nude‘ to brighten the waterline and then I lightly blended the same two eyeshadows on my lower lash line and underneath my wing. This is a wonderful technique to open your eyes up and make them appear larger.
~LIPS~
After rewatching the movie and researching her makeup, I was surprised to see that Holly Golightly’s lipstick was a very bright coral shade rather than the subtle pinky nude I always envision. To emulate her matte salmon shade, I like Revlon’s ‘Pink in the Afternoon’ and L’Oreal’s ‘Caring Coral’, but never be afraid to mix the colors already in your collection.
I worked extremely hard on this tutorial and am very happy with how my look turned out, so I hope you found this helpful and enjoyed reading!
