The dictionary defines makeup as “cosmetics such as lipstick or powder applied to the face, used to enhance or alter the appearance,” but for me, this word means so much more. Makeup is art, passion, and self-expression, but most importantly, makeup is the ultimate act of self-love.

No one should ever feel obligated to wear makeup for others, no one should ever have to rely on makeup to feel beautiful, and no one should be dependent upon makeup in order to love himself or herself. I choose to wear makeup for myself, while acknowledging my inner and natural beauty, and I always try my best to love myself in as many ways as I can.

However, the time that I spend applying my makeup is the only time out of the entire day when I am able to focus only on myself; it is the only time when I able to fully relax, have fun, and completely forget about all of the other things going on in my life. The time I devote to doing my makeup is my absolute favorite part of the day because it is the time when I am most happy — the time when I choose to love myself.

We all deserve to take time out of our day to get ‘dolled up’ — to pamper ourselves and feel extra pretty. Rather than serving as a symbol of insecurity, makeup serves a symbol of self-esteem, self-care, and self-love.

Makeup has the power to make us feel confident. Makeup is empowering, and those who are empowered empower others. When I look my best, I feel my best, and when I feel my best, I do my best.

I strongly believe that we must fully love ourselves before we are fully capable of loving others, and makeup is one way in which I love myself. By making a conscious effort to take care of and appreciate myself, I am becoming more able to continue to take care of and appreciate those around me.

Makeup has the power to transform us, not only on the outside, but also on the inside. And that is truly beautiful.

Regardless of whether or not you choose to wear makeup, please take time out of your day to love yourself, because you deserve it.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

XOXO,
Makena

Thank you so much makena. I’ve been trying figure out the contradiction between makeup and self acceptance. But your article made me realize that there is no contradiction. Makeup is just a higher level of self love.
